Top 10 Tips for Running a Successful Facebook Fan Page

Sharing your passion with others is always a great feeling, especially when they are as passionate about a subject as you are!

With social media, it is easier than ever to share your ideas and the things you love. Creating a Facebook page is the perfect way to do that, but it isn't always easy to get your page up and running. Here are my top ten tips for running a successful Facebook fan page.

1. Pick a Unique Name

Once you decide what you want your Facebook page to be about, the next step is creating a unique name that stands out.

If you search “The Walking Dead Memes” on Facebook, there are tons of results and it will be hard for your page to stand out in a sea of similar pages with the same name. It can also cause confusion among fans who don’t know Facebook as well.

Make sure your name is short and sweet. I would recommend keeping the name under 30 characters. Once you pick a name, keep the name consistent in the future and across all platforms to avoid confusion.

2. Create a Short URL

This will make it a lot easier for fans to go directly to your page. It will also make it a lot easier to advertise without money.

You can put a short URL in emails, memes, posts, fliers, basically anywhere. The shorter the better.

3. Stick to a Schedule

This is one of the hardest parts of running a page and something that I have been totally slacking on recently with The Laughing Dead.

Once you create a page, it is important to have regularly scheduled content. If a fan comes across your page and sees that it is inactive, they will have no motivation to like the page.

Don’t be discouraged if your posts don’t get a lot of attention. It is still important to post at least every two days, whether you think people are looking or not.

4. Find an Engaging Profile Picture

Your profile picture will most likely be the very first thing that a Facebook user will see, so it is important to make a good impression.

I would recommend creating an original profile picture for your page so that when it shows up in a search, users will be intrigued. It will be the very first sign that your page stands out from the rest, and first impressions are everything.

5. Take Advantage of Insights

Facebook insights are extremely helpful. They can tell you a lot about their fans and when your fans are the most engaged. There are a lot of statistics, but if you find the right data you can use it very efficiently.

The most useful data that I use on my Facebook page tells me the time that most of my fans are online and interacting with my posts. Using this, I can schedule posts so that the most people seem them.

6. Respond to Fans

Fans are the ones who run your page! If you have engaged fans, they will be more likely to comment on and share your posts, which means that their activity will show up in other’s newsfeeds so that you get a bigger audience!

As a fan, it is always a great feeling when a page you follow interacts with you directly. This will encourage them to come back and visit the page more frequently!

7. Get Involved in the Community

Regardless of what your Facebook page is about, there is probably a ton of other pages who have the same interests. This doesn’t mean you have to compete against each one, but you can both grow each other’s communities!

I’m not talking about a “share4share”. Like their pages, share their content, comment on their stuff, and show others how much you care about your topic!

Don't beg for shares or likes because that won't get you anywhere. I never share a page when I am asked. I share pages based on their engagement and the quality of their content.

8. Post Original Content

Anyone can find content from other pages and just repost them. That isn’t going to bring in any new fans.

I’m not saying that reposting is bad, but it can’t be the main source of contact between you and your fans. You need to have some original content to draw fans in and keep them there.

9. Quality is Key

No one likes blurry pictures. Make sure that when you post to your Facebook page, you are posting content that is easily visible, readable, and clear.

It is also important to read up on Facebook dimensions and make sure that you understand how they work.

10. Don’t Lose Hope

Your page won't become a hit overnight. It takes time, patience, and dedication. If the passion is there, then other people will realize that and will want to stick around!

If you have any questions, comments, or your own fan page that you are currently running, let me know! I will be happy to look at it and help out in any way that I can. Until then, keep up the good work!
