Agents of SHIELD Season 4 Episode 18 Review With Spoilers: No Regrets
These past few episodes have proven how far Agents of SHIELD has come over the past 4 seasons. The Framework has given us wonderful insights on the characters and certainly leaves the audience with much to think about. Agents of SHIELD is currently at the top of its game and we are seeing characters and plots from the entire season finally paying off.
This episode starts off with Coulson and Mace, aka the Patriot, staging a car crash so they can get a Hydra bus to pull over. They hoped to find Skye and another mysterious prisoner, but they were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Mace and Ward don’t trust Simmons because they think she is hiding something.
Simmons decides to tell Ward and Mace the truth and they don’t take it well. Mace refuses to believe people died for nothing and Ward refuses to believe he isn’t real. Inside the Framework, Elizabeth Henstridge as Simmons has shined. I love her portrayal of Simmons while she is inside the character and she brings a certain level that lacks in other characters that are aware the world is fake. You can tell Simmons is constantly conflicted because she knows the world isn’t real but her emotions are. She also has to deal with the very real emotions of others inside of the Framework. This scenario she is placed in makes for very complex dialogue and motivations for her.
Daisy is being tortured by Hydra and finds out Fitz believes she is here to take over his world. Fitz truly believes the Framework is his home. Daisy then gets a chance to talk to Aida, or better known as Madam Hydra in the Framework. Aida says she only fixed a single regret in each of their lives and the rest played out naturally. The idea of the Framework brings up a lot of interesting questions. For example, are these truly the actions of these characters? Technically it is a version of their mind so can they be blamed for what they do inside of the Framework? The reason these past 3 episodes have worked so well is because they all are extremely character driven. The writers make you question all the characters and their personalities and desires. It will be interesting once they wake up. Will they remember what happened inside of the Framework and have to deal with the things they have done as if they actually did it? I’m not sure how Fitz will handle remembering he executed an innocent woman or tortured Daisy.
Inside of the SHIELD base, Simmons gets emotional because she sees how happy Mack is with his daughter Hope. She can see how happy Mack is, even if he is living in a fake world with Hydra ruling everything. Meanwhile, Fitz’s dad is in the Framework and they have a good relationship with each other, the opposite of the real world. It is obvious that Fitz’s relationship with his father has had an extremely negative impact on his morals, even if he believes he has a positive relationship. It shows how a single thing Aida changed can completely change the character. But is it really Fitz’s fault? A single regret being fixed had changed all of the character’s lives drastically.
Coulson sneaks Mace and Ward into an Enlightenment Cultivation Center with a Hydra bus. Once inside, it is revealed that Trip, who died in season 2, was a SHIELD spy within Hydra until he was caught. Luckily Trip still has the information on a weapon and he makes sure it is safely delivered to SHEILD. While escaping, Coulson sees Chris, the student who he allowed to be sent to Hydra, being taken to quarantine. Coulson decides to rescue him so Mace and Trip decide to help. Ward and Simmons go to help the SHIELD agents escape. When Hydra discovers SHIELD is at their base, they send May. May is prepared to kill the Patriot and takes a dangerous drug that shortly gives her super strength.
May and Mace meet and they have an epic fight. The scene was extremely well choreographed and there were very little edits. It was nice to see a super strength battle with intense spy style fighting. May is defeated and in order to stop Mace, Hydra shoots missiles in the quarantine building. Unfortunately, while saving Chris, Mace is crushed inside of the rubble. May sees Mace’s sacrifice to save a child first hand and this makes her question everything. Meanwhile, in the real world, Aida disconnects Mace from the Framework when his machine flat lines. However, Mace’s sacrifice did not just save a computer-programmed child. His sacrifice convinced May to help Daisy. The episode ends with her giving Daisy terrigen crystals.
This episode sure gave the audience A LOT to think about. It also had a major death that will severely affect both the Framework world and the real world. One of my favorite quotes from this episode comes from Dr. Radcliffe. He says, “Depending on the circumstances, anyone can be capable of anything”. This quote perfectly sums up the Framework and what the characters have to go through.
Agents of SHIELD is at its strongest and each episode leaves me begging for more. This episode was certainly a game changer for this season and I can’t wait to see how it will affect the rest of the season.
